W Polsce na zimę zasypiają m.in.: jeże, świstaki, susły, popielice, koszatki, jenoty, borsuki, nietoperze i oczywiście niedźwiedzie. Mówiąc najkrócej i najbardziej obrazowo – zwierzęta podczas snu zimowego w pewnym sensie na jakiś czas przestają być stałocieplne. Temperatura ich ciała spada i może wynosić zaledwie kilka stopni powyżej temperatury otoczenia. Maleje też szybkość metabolizmu, częstotliwość oddychania, aktywność mózgu i tętno. Zwierzę nic nie je, zużywając tylko zgromadzone wcześniej zapasy tłuszczu.
